چکیده

Radar altimeters are important tools to monitor the volume of ice sheets. The penetration radar waves in snowpack is a major source uncertainty retrieve surface elevation. To correct this effect, better understanding sensitivity waveforms snow properties needed. Here, we present an extension Snow Model Radiative Transfer (SMRT) compute and conduct series simulations on Antarctic sheet. SMRT driven by roughness measured over large latitudinal range during two field campaigns Plateau. These measurements show that rougher, denser, less stratified, warmer, has smaller grains near coast than central compared satellite observations Ka, Ku, S bands. reproduces observed well. For all sites sensors, main contribution comes from echo. echo (volume scattering) represents up 40% amplitude total waveform power Ka band, at lower frequencies. highest Plateau due combination higher reflection surface, scattering Ku bands, inter-layer reflections band. In wave penetrates deeply because strong caused larger grains. opposite deeper absorption temperatures. elevation bias into constant 10 cm for 11 cm, 21 band close Plateau, respectively. Now performing simulations, further work will address how affect parameters retrieved more advanced retracking algorithms such as ICE-2 different cover surfaces.

Sensitivity Analysis of Brown Model Waveform in Radar Altimetry

In satellite altimetry (radar altimetry), the altimeter emits a pulse, with known power, to the earth surface and receives it back continuously to determine of the sea surface height. The time series of the mean returned power is recorded individually at satellite as the so-called waveform. Analytical model for the waveform is first introduced by Brown, which consists of six parameters: signif...

Comparison of a coupled snow thermodynamic and radiative transfer model with in situ active microwave signatures of snow-covered smooth first-year sea ice

Within the context of developing data inversion and assimilation techniques for C-band backscatter over sea ice, snow physical models may be used to drive backscatter models for comparison and optimization with satellite observations. Such modeling has the potential to enhance understanding of snow on sea-ice properties required for unambiguous interpretation of active microwave imagery. An end...

Snow Retrieval Algorithm for Passive Microwave Remote Sensing Using Dense Media Radiative Transfer Theory

The Quasi-crystalline Approximation and the Dense Media Radiative Transfer Equation (QCADMRT) have been applied to active and passive microwave remote sensing of snow [1] [2]. The salient features of the model include weaker frequency dependence than Mie scattering for the same grain size and a stronger forward scattering than Rayleigh phase function. We use passive microwave satellite data fro...

Modeling the Passive Microwave Remote Sensing of Snow Using Dense Media Radiative Transfer Theory with Nmm3d Rough- Surface Boundary Conditions

The effects of volume scattering and rough-surface scattering in passive microwave remote sensing are treated. The volumescattering model is based on dense medium radiative transfer (DMRT) theory with quasicrystalline approximation (QCA) for densely distributed sticky particles. The rough-surface bistatic scattering and emission are modeled using the numerical Maxwell model of 3D simulations (N...

Radiative Transfer in 3D Numerical Simulations

We simulate convection near the solar surface, where the continuum optical depth is of order unity. Hence, to determine the radiative heating and cooling in the energy conservation equation, we must solve the radiative transfer equation (instead of using the diffusion or optically thin cooling approximations). A method efficient enough to calculate the radiation for thousands of time steps is n...
